Poole Yacht Club Topper

Toppers are a fantastic single handed dinghy for young sailors with some sailing skills. Several of our Optimist sailors move into Toppers when they want to move on to a bigger, faster boat.

Many of our Topper sailors compete at local, national and even international events. The Topper is a versatile and hardy boat that can be loaded onto a car for easy transportation.

If you are a beginner and have your own Topper then why not start with Wednesday’s training group which caters for RYA Stage 3 and Start Race.

If you are more confident then we’d love to see you on Thursday Youth Race evenings during the summer months. This group is aimed at the more competent sailors who have reached RYA Start Race, it is parent led and is a great introduction to racing.

Summer 2020: Due to frequently changing Covid-19 regulations please check with your class captain for more info before joining in.

National Series Topper Event

National Series Topper Event

If you were visiting Poole YC at the beginning of May this year you would have noticed that we hosted the Super Topper traveller this year which had some great feedback, helped tremendously by the helpful weather.

That was just a warm up for the Toppers though, as they are back for more on 6th/7th July for a National Series event, the final of the 6 National events held all over the country. We are expecting over 150 toppers to be out on the water which is an awesome sight event for those of you who do not race. The sailors come from as far as Cornwall and Scotland to compete so I hope we will all give them a warm welcome. The car park will be a bit busy that weekend so if you plan to leave your car in the car park over that weekend it might be worth checking where best to park to help reduce some of the congestion.

If you would like to be on the water or just hang around the club to be part of this fabulous event you can volunteer through the ITCA website https://gbrtopper.ourclubadmin.com/event.php?event=572 .

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Super Topper Traveller Event Report

If you were visiting Poole YC at the beginning of June you could not fail but to have noticed the Super Topper Traveller Event, which had some great feedback from participants, helped tremendously by the beautiful weather!

Our very own Freddie Howarth came a creditable 4th overall, despite being, at 14, a year younger than most of the 5.3 rig fleet. Almost 90 young sailors took part in the weekend’s racing in some of the best conditions anyone would wish for.

Many of the HotShots will be training with the RYA UK Junior Squad and SW Zone Squad over the winter, if you aren’t and fancy still getting out on the water, come and join in with the Saturday afternoon Club Racing. The Toppers have their own start at 14:15, there will be a mixture of club line starts and committee boat starts throughout the winter.

If you are really keen, have a look at the ITCA website where you can sign up for the pre-zone training at Spinnaker Yacht Club. Only half an hours drive away and a fantastic place to practice all those skills you learnt over the summer.

Of course, if you would like any info about the event, please contact your new Class Captain or Vice Captain who will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
