Our RYA Principal, Katie Hooper, offers a range of training covering absolute beginners to seasoned racers.

Katie has over 10 years experience teaching sailing at home and abroad and has taught thousands of aspiring sailors.

A dedicated racer of Lasers, rs200s, kayaks and paddleboards, when not at work, Katie can be found out on the water.

Private Tutition

Private one to one tutition is available to Club members from our RYA Principal.

These lessons are catered to your individual ability and areas you wish to improve.

They are suitable for everyone from absolute beginners looking to sail for the first time, to seasoned sailors wanting to shave some minutes off their race timings.

RYA Stages 1 - 4

A 5 day course for 8-16 year olds, teaching all the fundamentals of sailing.
All students will advance 1 stage by the end of the course, with the quick learners advancing 2 stages.

Students will master the basics of sailing in the safety of the harbour with an instructor close by in a safety boat.

As we will be getting wet all students must be confident swimmers.
Bring your wetsuit and bouyancy aid if you own one.
Lunch can be bought at the Club, or you can bring a packed lunch.

Stage 1: A basic understanding of how a boat sailing, with some experience of steering and handling the boat

Stage 2: A range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor

Stage 3: Rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. Equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme

Stage 4: Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat.

RYA level 1

The perfect course for the adult beginners, completing RYA level 1 will leave you confident taking a boat out by yourself.

You will learn:

  • The parts of a boat and what they do.
  • How to tack.
  • Sailing across the wind.
  • Safety on boats.

The course takes place over two days. The first day will have 2 hours of dry land lessons followed by 5 hours on the water.
The second day will be all on the water, bring a packed lunch as we will sail out to a local bay for a picnic.

You will need a wetsuit, bring your bouyancy aid if you own one. As we plan lunch around the weather, if you are likely to get hungry please bring snack and drinks.
Lunch can be bought at the Club, or you can bring a packed lunch.

If you don't have a boat, the Club can provide one of it's hire boats.

RYA level 2

An improvement course for confident adult sailors, completing RYA level 2 will leave you confident taking a boat out by yourself.

You will learn:

  • Sailing on different points of sail.
  • The 5 essesitals of sailing:
    Centreboard, Sail setting, boat trim, boat balance, course made good.
  • Jibing.
  • Sailing around a course.
  • Sailing in all wind directions.

You will need a wetsuit, bring your bouyancy aid if you own one. As we plan lunch around the weather, if you are likely to get hungry please bring snack and drinks.
Lunch can be bought at the Club, or you can bring a packed lunch.
