Commodore’s Youth Challenge

Fri 27 Dec 2019

This year sees the Poole Yacht Club hosting this event in its 25th anniversary year.
The Poole Yacht Club Youth team will be attempting to retain the trophy from Parkstone for another year.
The Match race will be best of 5 races and will be held either in Top Triangle or Brownsea Road dependent on Wind/ weather conditions.

Competitors Briefing is at 9am for all sailors

The Commodores Alumni Race , an special event to honour this anniversary , will start ASAP after the sailors Briefing and will consist of the best of 3 races

The main Commodores Race event will start ASAP after the Commodores Alumni Race.

Reserve date for this event is 28th Dec should the weather conditions force a postponement

Both the Poole and Parkstone boats this year have been provided with new Main and Jib sails courtesy of Kemp Sails.

After 24 entertaining years of the Poole and Parkstone Youth sailors battling for the coveted Commodores Match Race Cup, this year promises to be extra special as the 25th running of the event.

To celebrate this milestone there will be an extra event for past representatives of both clubs: 2 crews of alumni will contest a best of 3 match; this will be followed by the main event, the best of 5 series for today’s youth teams under 18 years old on 27th December 2019. All teams must have at least 2 boys and 2 girls on board.

This is always a great occasion on the water to blow away the Christmas cobwebs and support the teams. The briefing is at Poole Yacht Club at 09:00 on Friday 27th December. The alumni races will start as soon as possible after that and should be completed by 12:00. If the wind direction is generally easterly or westerly the course will be set just off the Club.

Once the alumni match is complete crews will transfer and the Commodores Cup event will start as soon as possible; with the light failing and tide ebbing fast we will be back in the Clubhouse by 3 o’clock for prize-giving and late lunch for the competitors.

So if you have a boat in the water why not come out and support and bring friends or welcome those who may not have a boat. Come along to the Club on 27th and we’ll get you on a boat somewhere.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF THE WEATHER DOES NOT COMPLY THEN ALL ACTIVITY MAY BE MOVED TO THE RESERVE DATE OF SATURDAY 28TH DECEMBER.

If the weather looks marginal then we’ll aim to get messages to you on the club website and facebook. If you want to know something about match racing, a beginner’s guide is attached to this message.
